I recently dubbed Saffron the Dark Horse of 2014. This little lady has been flying under the radar until very recently!
In 2012, Rain had triplet does. Triplet does are something we always joke about. In 2012, we were still retaining all of does to grow our production herd, so triplet does were cause for serious celebration! 2012 was the year of herbs and spices names, so Rain's triplets were named Saffron, Sage, and Sarsaparilla.
Watching these girls grow up has been fun. It's so interesting to see three animals born at the same time to the same parents grow up and become very different girls. These girls all kidded this spring and joined the milking lineup. We have been hard pressed to choose which doe to keep from this group! Her sister Sage was always a flashy one, with her frosty hair, and her second sister Sarsaparilla is an absolutely sweet goat, just like their mother.
Now that these does have been in milk for a couple of months, we have decided that Saffron will be staying in the Flying Goat Farm herd for the foreseeable future. Her sisters will likely be for sale in the spring of 2015.
We love Saffron's easy going personality and her long build. While she actually makes a little bit less milk than either of her sisters, I think her capacity will increase over her next couple of freshenings and her udder is very well attached. I look forward to seeing what this lady is going to do for Flying Goat Farm in the future!
