We've made it through another kidding season here at Flying Goat Farm, and we couldn't be happier with the results! Aside from a difficult start with Abigail, and Clove's dramatic entrance into the world, things went quite smoothly. We're pretty confident that we're all done kidding now, unless Ruth is pulling the wool over our eyes again.
So, the Final Tally: *drum roll*..... Bucks: 8, Does 9!!!
The count in the barn is actually an even 50/50 split, because we also recently acquired a little buckling from Valley View Farm, whose sire is from Pruittville Nubians. This little guy's granddam is Pruittville's Huckleberry Frost. We are very excited to add this line to our herd!
We're also very happy with Nostradamus this year. We've gotten some lovely little does out of him, including triplet does out of Rain! He's maintained his mellow, goofy demeanor, and at this very moment is out with the freshened girls and the older crop of kids.
A quick recap of all the freshened does:
Abigail- 1 doe, Clove
Norah- 1 doe, Anise
Evey- 1 doe, Cicely. 1 buck, Hyssop
Libby- 1 doe, Myrrh, 1 buck, Caraway
Grace- 1 doe, Lavender. 2 bucks, Fennel & Carob
Dorothy- 2 bucks, Tarragon & Chicory
Rain- 3 does, Sage, Saffron & Sarsaparilla
Bea- 1 doe, Rosemary. 2 bucks, as yet unnamed.
We had two breach presentations, Grace and Bea. Both kids were repositioned and delivered with no serious issues for either doe. We had four completely unassisted deliveries, including Rain's triplets! Evey got a little bit of help with getting her kids to put their feet out in front to "dive" out, making a bit more comfortable for mom. Norah also got some help as a little first freshener delivering one huge doe.
Nothing like goat kids.... Happy spring!
